Pomerania 1840-1850
Billroth’s two homes, the island of Rügen and the town of Greifswald, lay within the province of Pomerania, which extends along the southern Baltic coast. This region has a long and complex history, lying at the intersection between Prussian, Danish, Swedish and Polish territories. For our purposes, we need only consider the Pomerania that was formed in 1815 after the Congress of Vienna and was one of the 10 provinces of Prussia.
